I am new here. Been reading about eMule all day today. I think I pretty much understand the concept. THe question I have is: Who makes money on eMule? And How? The software is free, the traffic for me is unlimited for a fixed price, so I can say it is free. I do not see any commercials, no one is trying to sell me anything. The only people who are selling to me while I use eMule is the Utility company - I have to pay for the electricity to power my computer 24/7 now.
Am I totaly stupid and can't see an obvious reason? I am not afraid to admit it if it is true. Please help me understand this. I think it would help everybody to understand how to use eMule in a most efficient way.
Thanks!

There is nothing to say really. You pretty much summed it up. The only way the devs make money is if you buy something in the eMule shop. And you actually get something there for a fair price.
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Could there be any indirect way of making money? (Like for example if you fly Delta Airlines you get a discount for Hertz car rental, that shows there is some sort of deal between the two). All these internet companies (Google, Yahoo etc) are SO well off - and they come free to the end user too! I just can't believe that such a briliant idea as eMule cannot make its creators really rich!

Is it so difficult to believe that people will do things for free? What a terrible society we live in if this is true.

Well, I think Vpozdnyak is missing the point of the open source credo. Monetary gain is not the only or even best incentive society has to offer. Whatever labor the devs put in is added to the collective pool for public use and they too get to draw from the same pool to advance their own agendas. You put in a brick and you get back a house; everybody wins.

I am just trying to understand the system! I personally know people who do things for other people for free. I understand there could be other than money motives. It does happen even thought sometimes it is hard to believe! All I am trying to get from this topic is that eMule is a truly altruistic endeavor. And if you guys are telling me that it is, then all I can say is BRAVO to the creators of eMule. It does not happen in this world very often!
Anybody has a different opinion?

Welcome to the world of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS)! There are many more projects like this (check out SourceForge.net) and eMule wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for the countless man-hours by other developers the world over contributing, albeit indirectly, to its progress. Rapid development time is only one of the reasons why open source projects are so enticing.

Excuse me, but these are nonsense
I like open source, and I try to use open source software as possible. I think the future is the open source software, because it's more secure (I can view the source), it's more customizable, the help can be done from all the community for bugs and others.
But if someone don't earn any money, he doesn't do nothing. Emule homepage has Google spots. You can donate to emule admins through Paypal. You can buy emule gadgets. It's perfectly legitimate, I don't want to say nothing against. But if you give nothing, you get nothing...
Furthermore, take a look to the homepages of servers...

Nobody is making money on eMule. Well, it is not a goal of eMule.
emule-project.net is not even taking donations anymore because the needs of the projects are forfilled (e.g. someone anonymous donated servers/bandtwidht where this forum and such software run on)
Note that taking money for the program (even if it would stay open source, that is not a conflict!) would make the program more vulnerable for copyrights holders that sue. (It is all about money in that case)
But: The server admins earn something by serving ads that are refeering to other p2p servers (usenext .?)
ISP earn lots of money by selling BW that is used by p2p programs.
The only major accepted mod that is taking money that i am aware of is xterme.
Of course there are a lot of scamsters arround that earn money selling a copy of eMule (Selling a GPL program is not illegal... strange but true, as long as you provide the source.)
Download the MorphXT emule mod here: eMule Morph mod
Trouble connecting to a server? Use kad and /or refresh your server list
Strange search results? Check for fake servers! Or download morph, enable obfuscated server required, and far less fake server seen.

I perfectly agree Unluckily who capitalize more on eMule are people that are against eMule, or capitalize illegally on it.
I'm only saying about all open source admins puts publicity and Paypal donation link (ok, there's no more, but if the site requires some money, I think it will be reactivated). It's normal and without any strange tricks, if Vpozdnyak is scared about it. Google spots are not intrusive, if you want to click them ok, but no popups and other. If you want to donate to someone, you can do it, they don't impose you nothing. If you want to buy some gadget, your fault
The only tricks you must pay attentions are offers at server homepages, fake emule files (viruses, porno videos instead of what you would download, spam results), fake servers (servers that don't allow file publishing and source exchanges), anothergreated2kclientbetterthanemulebutyoumustpay.
For spam results, only practice and intuition are required. For fake servers, update your server list only from this address, and you can fear no more:

Spend a few hours going through the forum, looking at the details. You will see all sorts, newbies and devs, moderators and others, all sharing their knowledge and often their kindness. Some have thousands of posts some few, others have spent years translating help files, or router guides. On top of that this is not even unique, in many domains, in many countries, all over the web, are there individuals putting their brain and their time to the benefit of all without retribution.
I have used eMule from nearly the beginning, without ever having been asked for any other thing than the pleasure of sharing my files. If you understand that, then I, at least, welcome you.

I admire you all for your contributions.
I have not heard one negative answer yet, this is quite amazimg as usually there is always one person who "spoils the party".
Guys and gals, please don't get me wrong, I was just trying to make sure I understand eMule.
Thanks for your warm welcome!

Emule? The program? That`s not what I mean.
But with the network. Edk. The anti p2p organizations make money though it. Weird thing.

It's not so strange. But it's also not necessarily only anti-P2P companies that profit from the network. The main complaint I've been hearing from various board members is the porn industry flooding the network with DRM'd content.

Hi Vlad,
It is just a guess, I am not saying I know for sure: imagine emule client besides other good things is a spyware
at the same time and collects and sends information about your logins, passwords, interests, purchase patterns, etc
to its develpers.
I am new to emule/edonkey stuff, I do not even have them on my computers because I have heard some
people saying that these programs spy on you. I do not know how true this is. May be not, may be yes...

Don't spread rumours. eMule is not spyware/adware. nor does the installer have an option to install spyware/adware. You can check the source yourself to verify.
